Stonking Stingray (to be 26.10) Beta Freeze

Utkarsh Gupta on behalf the Ubuntu Release team alerts us that Ubuntu stonking stingray (to be 26.10) is now in Beta freeze. We’re reminded what this means and its effects, with the spinning of beta candidates mentioned, as well as reminding us testing is to be reported on the Ubuntu Test Observer (link provided).

Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray Beta will be delayed

In this post by Matthieu Clemenceau we’re alerted that the beta release of Ubuntu 26.10 (stonking Stingray) has been delayed and is now expected on October 1, 2026. We’re told it’s the result of some “unforeseen infrastructure issues” with no other date changes foreseen.

Accelerating delivery of CVE fixes with a new Kernel release strategy

We’re reminded that speed is critical to fixing security vulnerabilities, and thus we’re told that Canonical is “outlining a transition from its current 4-week regular and 2-week security kernel Stable Release Update (SRU) cycles to a unified, rapid 2-week SRU cycle, published weekly”. We’re given details of this change, a graph of Linux kernel CVEs published by month clearly outlining the why, and more in this breakdown.

Security advisory: multiple vulnerabilities found in Canonical LXD

Mark Laing alerts us that several “critical and high impact vulnerabilities affecting LXD were identified and addressed”. We’re given rather extensive details of these, including impact and the snap versions with fixes, and more. Thanks is given to palkeo, manus-use, EclipsSec, Yuliang Xiao and Stéphane Graber.

Checkbox 8.0.0 stable release

Massimiliano Girardi tells us a new version of Checkbox is available in deb format (Stable PPA) and as a snap (stable channel). We’re given details, including Checkbox 16 support with a new feature (expected failures) mentioned. We’re reminded that we won’t be able to resume testing on update, so told to finish all sessions first, and given commands to do this and update. A list of new features & bugfixes is provided.

Imagecraft 1.0 released

Dmitry Malykhanov announces the first stable release of Imagecraft. Mention is made of the improvements over prior versions, with links provided to the release notes, documentation, GitHub, and Chisel documentation.

Rust-coreutils 0.10 now available for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Julian Andres Klode informs us that Rust-coreutils 0.10 is now available for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS users, and is being rolled out via ‘phased updates’. We’re told how we can bypass the staged rollout, and that version 0.12 is now in Ubuntu 26.10 beta. A list of included security fixes (compared to prior versions of rust-coreutils) is provided.

Mir in 27.04 - what’d you want?

Michał Sawicz notes that Ubuntu 27.04 isn’t that far into the future, and thus is starting the roadmap for that cycle. We’re asked if we note anything missing in our Mir builds or Mir-based sessions, with this being our chance to add to the ‘wish list’ for Mir in the Ubuntu 27.04 cycle.

The new Ubuntu wiki has launched

Shane Crowley announces the launch of the new Ubuntu wiki. We’re told it’s been deployed and we’re given some details of it. We’re also told “what’s changing during the launch and revisit some background for the wiki project” and of newer features since last update. Numerous links are provided, some screenshots, and more too. We’re warned that saved links on the old wiki won’t be working, with CommunityHelpWiki - Community Help Wiki pages to redirect next. Details on using the page are provided. This is an extensive, and somewhat tutorial post, and includes lots of ‘where to go’ details too.

Microsoft Entra ID Password and MFA sign-in comes to Ubuntu

Jean Baptiste Lallement informs us that with the latest release of authd, we can now sign in directly with our Microsoft Entra ID password to complete MFA challenges required by some organizations. We’re shown an embedded video that describes this and shows us it in action (with Ubuntu stonking/26.10), given details and told the Entra ID integreation is built on libhimmelblau, and given a list of benefits. Ubuntu 26.10 Ships 100% Rust Coreutils; Audit Found 44 CVEs Beyond Rust’s Scope

Clayton Lewis mentions the coming Ubuntu 26.10 beta release, and tells us it’ll be the first “major general-purpose Linux distribution” with “every core command-line utility - cp, mv, rm, ls..” now running as “memory-safe Rust code” by default. Clayton then tells us that “memory-safe” may not be without flaws, noting that a security audit commissioned by Canonical found 44 vulnerabilities that Rust code would not have prevented. This post reminds us of the work that started back in the Ubuntu 25.10 cycle, through to where we are now, and what is still to be done.

Ubuntu cloud images dropped another package by accident

Joey Sneddon tells us that xxd went missing from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS’s minimal cloud images. Joey gives us a little on the ‘why’ the package was dropped (was included as a depends requirement for a now dropped package), and tells us the both curl and xxd have been restored to updated images. We’re also told xxd has been removed (intentionally) from 26.10 images, but is still available in the repositories for those that need it.

Ubuntu Linux Maker Canonical Achieved $345M USD In Revenue For 2025

Marcus Nestor alerts us to the release of Mir 2.30 by Canonical, with brief details on what it is and where it’s extremely useful. Ubuntu 26.10 adds a Windows-style window snapping panel

Joey Sneddon tells us of a new ‘tile your apps’ feature and ‘layout picker’ we’ll find in Ubuntu 26.10. We’re given details with a screenshot, plus an embedded video, to help us better appreciate what is being described. Joey describes it as a ‘boost for multi-tasking’, but opines the lack of an off-switch for the feature he’d like added (and is available via extension).
